I dream a little dream of KL airport

I know what you’re thinking. Who dreams of airports? This is the place where airplane lovers rejoice, passengers with fears of flight pop xanax at the departure gate, and some mothers wish they could give a few to the kiddies who just started wailing.

I have been dreaming of the Kuala Lumpur airport for a few days now. Why you ask? Besides being a great hub for travel within SE Asia, it has something I’ve been craving.

These pies got a hold on me

These mouth watering treats are fried apple pies from the Mc Donalds. Yup, you read right. I got a craving for fried apple pie- from Mc Donalds. Worse things have happened, like the time I ate a whole box of mac and cheese before bedtime or the time I inhaled 4 doughnuts with cinnamon and sugar.

Back when I was a kid, I used to eat these up like candy. Chocolate? Not me. I loved fruit anything. As you can tell I kinda love food in general. And not all food has to be gourmet to be good. So back in the good old days, they had these tasty fried pies at all Mc Donalds. One day, it all came to an end.

I remember it vividly: the late night window, serious munchies, and a bark from the speaker box says “let me repeat your order: 2 double cheeseburgers, 2 large fries, 1 big mac, and 4 apple pies?” You got it buster. Note: all that food was not for me. I pull up to the window, skipping the part where I pay since my best friend worked the day shift and we had hookups at night. We toss the bags of grease on the floor of my Saturn and stuff ourselves with fries on the way home.

As soon as I was done devouring the cheeseburgers, I reach for my pie…and what? What’s this new box color? Why does the pie say baked on the outside? Clearly there had been some mistake. I blame my best friend, accusing her of giving me the ‘other’ kind of pies they had. Surely we could go back and correct this. She asks me when was the last time I’d had an apple pie. I can’t remember.

So that was the day the fried apple pie died. My mother was horrified. The new pies tasted nothing like the originals. I mean, everything fried is good right? I had given up the fight. I resigned myself to eat these baked monstrosities for the rest of my life.

Fast forward to the present day Kuala Lumpur airport. We’ve just landed and after a few months without junk food, we head straight for the counters to order our burgers…and then I spot it. I think to myself, it can’t be. Not after all this time….

Right then and there my faith in humanity was renewed as I realized that this was heaven. This magnificent airport had lead me straight to apple pie heaven. I was staying there and I was never coming back. Mike tells me I can only have one. I ordered 2 anyway.

Heading back to Chiang Mai after my birthday, we returned to the KL airport for breakfast. In my sleepy stupor I realize they also sell fried apple pies for breakfast. Genius. I order 5 pies to go.

Do you have an particular food craving at an airport? Something you get nowhere else?

  • Haha, those pies are SO good! I dream of Barcelona airport. There is a store there that I LOVE!!!

    • Mica says:

Is it a food related store? I tell you I can’t wait to get back to KL….I am going to stock up on those pies! Carajo, they are so good. Its so wrong.

  • You are too funny!! I love those little pies!! Did you go back to CM and freeze some of them so you can break them out when you get a craving?

    • Mica says:

No I did bring 4 back with me on the plane and ate 2 in the air, and 2 when I got here. I will be hitting them up again next Tuesday. Those pies don’t stand a chance.

  • Kjersti says:

Oh my God I can’t believe you are writing about these! I LOVE those pies and I seriously cried when McDonalds stopped selling them in Norway a few years back. For almost a year, my office was a floor above McDonalds, and my lunch would consist of 1 cheeseburger, 1 toast (which they also stopped selling!) and a pie.

And yes, I gained some weight during that year. But sooo worth it. We are heading to KL in January, and even if we are entering and leaving the country by train, it seems I must take a detour to the airport!

Please tell me the McDonalds is outside the check-in zone?

    • Mica says:

That is awesome! Yup, the McDonalds is outside, before you get a taxi. You can stop in on your way out of the airport. Its not in the terminal. Please stop by!! Enjoy :-)
