İskender kebap, Döner in Turkey

İskender kebab is one of the most famous meat foods of northwestern Turkey and takes its name from its inventor, İskender Efendi, who lived in Bursa in the late 19th century. They should rename this dish heaven in your mouth because this is exactly how  it tastes.

Döner in Istanbul

It is a kind of döner kebab prepared from thinly cut grilled lamb basted with hot tomato sauce over pieces of pita bread and slathered with melted sheep butter and yogurt. We were lucky enough to try this delicious dish in Istanbul, and alas we were so busy stuffing ourselves I forgot the write down the name of this local restaurant we enjoyed it at. I will rectify this in 2 weeks when we head back to Istanbul.

How good does this look?

  • Looking at this picture makes me long to return to Istanbul! I just loved their kebabs! Especially liked how each state had their own version. :)

Hi Rosemarie, the food is definitely delicious! I am eating way, way too much bread now too. Have yet to find something I don’t like, and we went to a cooking class in Istanbul this past week so have heaps of new recipes to try out back in Dalyan!

Wait till this heat cools off mate, trust me. I’m convinced from end of May- August Turkey should be avoided at all costs!
